In 1992, twenty local residents met at the Birchwood Senior Center to explore the idea of creating a historical society to preserve the history of the Birchwood area.

The Society first participated in the Bluegill Christmas Festival on December 5–6, 1992. Members also entered a parade float featuring an albino deer in the Bluegill Festival parades of 1992 and 1993 to introduce the new organization to the community.

On June 2, 1993, the Society held a potluck supper at DeLong’s Log Cabin in the Woods, built on the site of an old logging camp. Guest speakers included Dr. Noland Eidsmoe and local pioneer John Marcon.

Volunteers gathered regularly to build the Log Museum. The foundation was poured on August 6, 1992. By September 1993, the logs had been raised, the roof was shingled, and the doors were installed. The museum was completed in 1994. On May 27, 1995, an Open House and Ice Cream Social was finally held.

In August 1993, the Society accepted the donation of the Morey House from Howard Morey.  Howard and his family used the Morey House for visits to Birchwood throughout his life.
